Court Ordered Service

Friends provides opportunities for court ordered community service at the MaryAnn Wright
Animal Adoption and Education Center, located at 16121 Reckinger Road, Dearborn, MI 48126.

Due to the nature of our work, and the community members we serve, we are only able to accommodate certain court ordered offenses.  Friends is NOT able to work with offenses involving (but not limited to): felonies, animal cruelty, assault & battery, violent behavior, sexual assault, and the use of opioids or IV drugs.

If you are unsure if you are eligible for the court ordered service program at Friends for Animals, please contact our Animal Services & Administration Office at 313-943-2697 ext. 6002.

Court Ordered Service Rules:

  • Community service hours are by appointment only. To set appointments, please call the Animal Services team at 313-943-2697, ext. 6002.
  • Workers must arrive at the shelter at 8am to begin their service and must stay for a minimum of 2 hours each day, but are welcome to stay longer if they’d like. You may come any day Monday-Saturday.
    • The shelter is closed for court ordered service on all major holidays.
    • Workers under the age of 18 are only allowed to complete 4 hours per day.
  • Typical tasks include cleaning kennels, washing dishes, laundry, landscaping, and more.
  • Workers are not permitted to use cell phones while working.
  • Appropriate clothing must be worn. Long pants and closed toe shoes are required. Refrain from wearing dangling jewelry or headphones. We recommend wearing clothes you wouldn’t mind getting dirty.
  • Friends for Animal Staff will ask workers to leave if they are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, if they are found not working, or for any inappropriate behavior.

To get started, please call the team at 313-943-2697, ext. 6002 to set an appointment. We will need your Order of Probation form that includes four points of information:

  • What the offense is
  • How many hours are required to be completed
  • The court that completed the sentencing
  • Probation officer’s name and contact information

You will be asked at the time of your appointment to complete a shelter hold harmless agreement.

Workers under the age of 18 will need a parent signature on the hold harmless agreement before beginning work.
