The overwhelming sense of guilt is hard to shake off when returning a holiday present.
But thanks to a local pet adoption group, returning a gift this year can help an abandoned animal.
Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit is holding an “unwanted gift” auction where proceeds will go toward the organization’s mission of helping lost and abandoned animals.
The group is seeking donations of unwanted and unused holiday gifts like electronics, sporting goods, jewelry, tools and kitchen equipment. The organization will also consider lightly used products, if they’re in perfect condition, a news release from the organization said.
“With the Spring Auction for the Animals, everyone wins,” said Kim Cross, president and CEO. “A donation to the auction solves the awkward situation of what to do with a gift that just doesn’t work out. There’s no dealing with the hassles of shipping the item to Amazon or elsewhere and waiting for credit. Most importantly, the animals benefit.”
The auction’s proceeds will go toward the cost of care for more than 2,500 of the shelter’s animals. The auction is scheduled for spring because it’s known as “kitten season” when hundreds of abandoned or lost kittens arrive at the shelter.
The online auction runs from March 19-29 with more than 100 items being featured in the auction, according to a news release. Donations can be dropped off at the group’s office at 2661 Greenfield in Dearborn.
