After recovering from and repairing the flood damage from last month, FCBD 2021 at Green Brain is going back to basics, stated co-owner Dan Merritt.
“And that is all about getting comics into the hands of the people. And helping them find new entertainment options beyond the screen,” he said.
In accordance with the Center for Disease Control’s recommendations, Merritt is asking customers to wear a mask while indoors for the protection and safety of everyone. Capacity will be limited in the free comic line and on the sales floor.
“Additionally, we have redesigned the floor plan to allow for quicker FCBD free comic selection,” said Merritt. “This new plan allows for patrons that are only interested in the free comics to exit quicker. This will also open up space and create a safer environment for customers that would like to shop on the regular sales floor.”
Outside the store, under the FCBD tent, Green Brain will host a small group of local comic book creators, including George Dagan, writer of “Intergalactic Deathmatch”; Porche Johnson, writer/artist of the webcomic “Cryptic Yume”; and Neko Heavy Industries, producer of finely-crafted notebooks, prints, and design work.
Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit will also be present with an adoptable animal. Green Brain is also accepting canned food donations for Gleaners Community Food Bank of Metro Detroit. Customers are also encouraged to appear in costume (provided they’re family-friendly).
“This year’s FCBD will be about building and reinforcing the idea of community,” said Merritt. “Since this pandemic started, our Brainiac community has come together to keep Green Brain open, so that we can continue to provide a little break from the daily grind. We are looking forward to thanking everyone that comes through our doors. Thanking them for visiting, supporting small business, and keeping the comic store culture alive and well.”
