Petco Foundation Invests in Lifesaving Work of Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit

April 16th, 2020

Grant of $13,500 will extend efforts to save more animal lives in Metro Detroit

Dearborn, MI (4.13.20) – Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit (FAMD) announced it has
been awarded a $13,500 grant from the Petco Foundation to provide lifesaving kitten
foster kits and supplies for the foster volunteers who will care for over 600 kittens this
spring.

The Petco Foundation investment will help to provide supply kits to all kitten foster
volunteers. These kits contain necessary items, such as warmers, scales, formula and
medications to enable the foster families to monitor the kittens’ health right from home.
This program has resulted in healthier kittens and more lives saved.
“Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit is honored to be the recipient of a grant from the
Petco Foundation. This lifesaving grant will assure that our dedicated kitten foster
volunteers are provided the resources they need to care for the 600 plus fragile little lives,”
said Elaine Greene, Executive Director of FAMD.

Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the rescue and
protection of animals in the community, while inspiring healthy relationships between
people and their companion animals. Since 1995, FAMD has been a caregiver and advocate
for 59,000+ rescues. FAMD meets its mission objectives by saving all adoptable animals,
providing high-quality animal care and adoption services, and delivering innovative outreach
programs and activities that promote education. All animals adopted from the adoption
center are vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and microchipped. FAMD provides a number of
services and programs including: Operation Feed Fido, low-cost spay/neuter and microchip
vouchers, educational and volunteer opportunities, reduced adoption fees for active or
retired military members and seniors, and Read to Rover (or cats) for young readers. It has a
state-of-the-art facility and robust foster volunteer program made up of both veteran
volunteers and new monthly volunteers. The FAMD Kitten and Cat Foster program has
expanded to over 110 foster parent homes and an overall save rate of 91% in 2019. The
program has continued to increase the save rate for kittens and cats and has a positive
impact in the community.

About the Petco Foundation
At the Petco Foundation, we believe that every animal deserves to live its best life. Since
1999, we’ve invested more than $260 million in lifesaving animal welfare work to make that
happen. With our more than 4,000 animal welfare partners, we inspire and empower
communities to make a difference by investing in adoption and medical care programs,
spay and neuter services, pet cancer research, service and therapy animals, and numerous
other lifesaving initiatives. Through our Think Adoption First program, we partner with
Petco stores and animal welfare organizations across the country to increase pet
adoptions. So far, we’ve helped more than 6.5 million pets find their new loving families, and
we’re just getting started. Visit petcofoundation.org to learn more about how you can get
