Is there a cost to volunteer?
For adult volunteers, there is a one-time, non-refundable program fee of $30 which will be collected online at the time of scheduling your Volunteer Orientation. This helps to cover the cost of volunteer supplies, resources, and training. It includes your volunteer t-shirt and name badge. If you sign up for the Volunteer Orientation and no-show, or choose not to proceed with volunteering after attending, the fee will be a direct donation to animal care. If financial circumstances pose a challenge, please don’t hesitate to contact our Volunteer Department to discuss options.
Is volunteering at Friends for Animals a good fit for me?
We hope so! FAMD aims to be as inclusive as possible and remove any hindrances to potential volunteers, but as an animal shelter we do have some limitations based on the nature of the work we do. We may not be a good fit for you if you fall into any of the following categories. Please contact the Volunteer Department to discuss further.
Please bring your volunteer t-shirt, name badge, closed toed shoes, long pants, and any snacks or beverages you may require during your volunteer shift. Please leave your nice clothing and jewelry at home. Please also do not bring any friends, personal pets, or family members with you for your volunteer shift. While we love the enthusiasm to share the volunteer experience, we need to ensure that all help has been properly trained. Please have any interested parties fill out a volunteer application for themselves and we’ll get them started as soon as possible!
Do volunteers get first dibs or discounts on animal adoptions?
Ensuring fairness in the adoption process is key! Adoptions operate on a first-come, first-approved basis to provide equal opportunities for everyone. Currently, there isn’t a special adoption discount specifically for volunteers, but you may have the chance to be the first to apply for an animal if you volunteer outside of opening hours before the public has a chance. We appreciate your commitment to our cause, and rest assured, every loving home is valued and celebrated equally!
Can I complete court- ordered volunteer hours at FAMD?
Yes! We have a specialized court-ordered service program designed separately from our regular volunteer program. You can find more information here. Please note: Hours logged under our regular volunteer program will NOT count towards court-ordered service. We appreciate your understanding and commitment to the specific requirements of the court-ordered service program.
Do I have to be 16+ to volunteer at FAMD?
No! Our Youth Volunteer Program is an adult mentored program for ages 12-15. Please look here for more information. We are not currently able to offer in-shelter volunteering opportunities for those under the age of 12, but we do have special programs and occasional special events geared towards those who are younger.
Can my company or organization volunteer as a group?
Absolutely! We offer group volunteering opportunities for corporations, clubs, schools, and scout troops. We schedule these shifts on a monthly basis according to the needs and availability of the shelter. Please look here and here for more details.
I need service hours for school or work. Can I complete these here?
Certainly! We warmly welcome your interest in fulfilling service hours with our organization. Your commitment not only meets academic or professional requirements but also plays a crucial role in supporting the welfare of our beloved animals. Let’s make your service hours meaningful and impactful! Please indicate if you need hours recorded and signed off on in your application or at your Volunteer Orientation.
May I stop volunteering at any time?
There is no contract or time commitment that you’re locked into. While we appreciate a heads up, you are free to stop volunteering at any point. If we don’t see or hear from you in 90 days, your volunteer account will be deactivated. You may always contact the Volunteer Department with questions and concerns.
Is this a safe place to volunteer with allergies?
FAMD separates cats and dogs in the building, so those with mild animal allergies should be able to work comfortably in certain areas. Cat and dog laundry are washed together, so those with severe allergies should avoid laundry. This is not a safe place for those with an airborne peanut allergy or for those who are pregnant. Please know your own allergies and limitations. If in-shelter volunteer work is not safe for you, please check out our offsite volunteer roles.
